The roots of the Beatriz Ball Collection began in 1991, when she began working hand-in-hand with skilled metalware artisans in the outskirts of Mexico City, jointly creating updated, innovative designs in a special lustrous alloy of many metals.

Our pieces are made entirely by hand, one at a time, using the ancient art of sand casting: pouring a premium quality alloy of molten aluminum into sand molds, and then going through four levels of polishing.

More than twelve sets of hands are involved in the creation of each piece, and the result of this intensely handmade process is a piece with depth of character, warmth and personality that communicates in a way that only a handmade piece can.

Arthur and Elena Court live what they describe as a "simple, quiet life" in the San Francisco Bay Area that would tax the energies of most people running a successful company, designing its products, contributing their time and effort to a long list of conservation and wildlife causes, and traveling the world to attend work-related events as well as in pursuit of the minerals and artifacts they passionately collect.

Raised on a farm in Minnesota, Arthur spent eighteen years following his WWII Naval service working for design and decorating firms in San Francisco. He opened his own business in 1966 and enjoyed worldwide success with custom mountings of his own vast mineral collection. During succeeding decades he traveled the globe in search of exotic specimens created by both nature and man, taking a greater and greater hand in designing the products he presented to his customers. He is best known for the marvelous, intricate aluminum creations that form the large part of the Courts' business today.

Elena Orsini-Court is a native San Franciscan. She studied Oriental art history and modern art and has contributed to the public awareness of art, as a corporate art consultant and a curator for public art exhibitions. Currently, Elena serves as director of the product development and president of Arthur Court Designs ®.

Josiah Spode I (1733-1797) founded the Stoke-on-Trent based pottery company, Spode, in 1770. His inherent skills and sheer dedication to his business lead to two major achievements that would redefine the pottery industry:

  • The development of a winning formula for fine bone china.
  • The perfection of blue under-glaze printing

Born on 23rd March 1733, Josiah I began a career in the pottery industry at the age of 16. He later married a haberdasher, Ellen Findley, in 1754 and had eight children, Josiah II, Samuel, Mary, Ellen, Sarah, William, Anne and Elizabeth.

After successes working for many of the best potters in the Stoke-on-Trent area, including Thomas Whieldon, Josiah I set up his own small pottery factory in 1760 and in 1770 established the Spode pottery company. He bought up land that adjoined the factory enabling him to make use of the intricate canal system that served the potteries in Stoke-on-Trent, allowing raw materials to be brought in and finished ware out.

In 1778 Josiah I sent his son, Josiah II, to London to open a showroom and shop. This shrewd decision meant that Spode had direct information from their valued and wealthy customer base in London. Spode was able to design and manufacture ware that customers actually wanted leading the company to great success.

Royal Doulton

Royal Doulton is a classic English brand name in tableware and ceramics with a pedigree dating back to 1815, when John Doulton used his life's savings to launch a partnership with Martha Jones and John Watts at a stoneware factory in Lambeth, London. Today, Royal Doulton is a world-class brand in quintessential British tableware, collectable figurines, crystal, glass and giftware.

Yet it had truly down to earth origins. Thanks to stoneware, the business that subsequently focused on the Doulton family name took full advantage of the revolution in sanitation during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). It established the world's first stoneware pipe factory and went on to become Britain's top Victorian manufacturer of sanitary ware.

John worked with his son Henry to grow the business, and their portfolio soon extended to artistic pottery, ultimately embracing ornamental, commemorative, and tableware products. Indeed, Doulton set the pace in new art schools and reaped the rewards at exhibitions. By 1871, Henry had launched the Lambeth Studio with local designers and artists who experimented with a variety of materials and glazes in an industrial setting. Their names included the Barlow family, Frank Butler, Mark Marshall, Eliza Simmance, and George Tinworth. Today their pioneering work commands increasingly high prices.

The Reason Behind the "Royal"
As evidenced by the name, Royal Doulton enjoys the distinction of a "Royal Warrant" -- a mark of distinction bestowed upon people or companies who have regularly supplied members of the Royal Family with goods or services. Royal Warrants, regarded as a mark of supreme excellence and quality, cannot be bought or sold. King Edward awarded the first Royal Warrant to Royal Doulton in 1901. The Doulton Company then became The Royal Doulton Company. Presently, the Royal Doulton brand holds two Royal Warrants, the Royal Albert brand holds two Royal Warrants and the Minton brand holds one.
